STOTT PILATES is an exercise method for all bodies at all stages of life and a completely modifiable system of more than 500 exercises performed on a mat or using specialized equipment.
STOTT PILATES has a 20-year legacy of research and development of the original exercise method pioneered by Joseph Pilates 90 years ago. STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to traditional Pilates. It is one that incorporates modern biomechanic research and current thinking about movement and therapy and is recognized worldwide by the medical community as a leader in the industry. You benefit because you get the body transforming and slimming results from Pilates while also improving the health of your spine and improving your posture.
Our extensively trained instructors offer a variety of training options, but we usually recommend all Pilates clients begin with an individual session to evaluate your personal needs and design a custom program that will meet your fitness goals. Many clients continue to train privately two to three times per week, or they combine private pilates training with one of our award winning group fitness classes that include Xtend Barre, PowerMatwork, or HIIT55™, and Body Conditioning: two classes developed and taught exclusively at equilibrium.

Studio Fitness Classes

Xtend Barre Workout
Equilibrium is proud to be the first Michigan studio to offer classes in the Xtend Barre Workout Method. The Xtend Barre Workout is simply the best barre program available today because it was developed with dance principles at its core, and is taught by pilates instructors. Our Xtend Barre teachers, who are all Pilates certified, not only instruct exercises, but also provide cues that challenge and correct form and alignment. Xtend Barre classes move quickly, providing a cardio challenge while working on your strength, stability and stamina. This class will give you a total body workout.
The Xtend Barre system is unique because it sculpts the body proportionally, working from top to bottom, resulting in a long and lean physique. Xtend Barre avoids endless repetitions in awkward positions that can add bulk to your body. Xtend classes add props like yoga straps, stretch bands and playground balls to bring a fun twist to an already intense workout.
HIIT55™
HIIT 55-High Intensity Interval Training for 55 minutes. A safe purpose driven workout developed and taught exclusively at Equilibrium. Each class includes a warm up, three cardio circuits, including one Tabata, three strength circuits, including TRX, Spring Wall Board, and 6-10 pound medicine balls, one core circuit and a final stretching interval. Tabata training is a type of high-intensity interval training that follows a specific format and can be offered in our cardio-circuit room or in Studio H. Because HIIT increases muscle mass and muscle oxidative capacity there is a 24-hour boost in metabolism. HIIT55 helps your body burn calories for 24 hours!

Continuous movement to great music keeps your heart rate up during intervals of aerobic activity, strength training, and balance training, utilizing BOSUS, weighted bars, hand weights, TRX, medicine balls and more. Intervals are timed so that you never get hurt keeping up with the most fit member of class; you do as many repetitions as you can safely do in the interval time making this class great for people who enjoy a personal challenge and want to monitor their progress weekly.
Most important: Equilibrium classes are taught by an elite team of certified STOTTPILATES instructors, so proper form is never sacrificed giving you the safest body sculpting class available. Modifications due to fitness level, physical limitations and prior injuries are provided to ensure a safe and effective workout for for everyone. Total Body Conditioning™ introduced October 1, 2012, is based on the latest findings in exercise science and functional fitness, and developed and taught exclusively at Equilibrium.
Gyrokinesis
Gyrokinesis exercises, performed on small stools or a mat, allows one to work on the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular, as well as all other joint articulation. This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements. These movements stimulate the body’s internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements.

The Gyrotonic System
Experience a machine-guided system of movement based on the principles of Kundalini yoga, dance, swimming and the martial arts. Gyrotonic is a method of movement and an exercise system developed starting in the 1980s by Juliu Horvath. As with so many types of movement work, Gyrotonic was invented as a way to heal its founder’s own injuries. As a dancer, Horvath herniated three discs and suffered knee, shoulder and ankle injuries. He tried to rehab himself using Hatha yoga, which he felt injured him further. It was at this point that Horvath invented Gyrotonic intuitively by following what he refers to as “internal movement.” His pain diminished, and he lives a healthy, relatively pain-free life today.
According to the Gyrotonic website, “Gyrotonic methodology allows users to stretch and strengthen muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. These exercises are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, thus enhancing aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuro-muscular rejuvenation.”
The Gyrotonic equipment, designed by Horvath, uses a series of hand-and foot-operated pulleys and weights to move the joints and limbs in (mostly) circular patterns, designed to create “openness” in the body. When performing the exercises, the influence of yoga on the system is obvious, and the pulleys and straps somehow manage to give the feeling of swimming without water. The “feeling” of doing Gyrotonic is often compared to dance and Tai Chi.
Like Pilates, the effectiveness of Gyrotonic is determined by the training and experience of the instructor. As Michigan’s only licensed STOTT PILATES training and certification center, Equilibrium has always been the source for the best Pilates instruction. This studio is committed to apply that same standard to Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis. Certified Gyrotonic instructors teach our classes.
