The Gyrotonic System

based on the principles of Kundalini yoga, dance, swimming, and the martial arts.

Like pilates, this system was developed in Europe by a multi-talented performing artist. Both methods utilize specialized equipment, and result in lengthening and strengthening of core muscle, increased flexibility, and a leaner physique

To those who describe pilates equipment as medieval looking, they should check out the bizarre-looking Gyrotonic equipment. The pulley-tower is a contraption of weights, pulleys, discs, and sheepskin lined leather straps to hold onto or attach to the lower extremities. the exerciser sits, stands, or lies down and does choreographed sets of circular or spiral movements with the arms and legs that originate in the spine. Unlike other exercise equipment, there is total freedom of movement and no restriction on speed.

Like pilates, the effectiveness of Gyrotonic is determined by the training and experience of the instructor. As Michigan's only licensed STOTT PILATES* training and certification center, Equilibrium has always been the source for the best pilates instruction. This studio is committed to apply that same standard to Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis. Our classes are taught by certified Gyrotonic instructors.

For those looking to offer more training options to their clients
Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis can be a great way to broaden your range as a trainer. Both the Gyrotonic and the Gyrokinesis Teacher Training consist of the following steps. First, take a few private sessions or classes to become familiar with the system and movement. Then begin your Pre-Training, a 24-28 hour course (usually over two consecutive weekends, but may also be done in six consecutive days) working with the movement for your own body. Within three months of completing Pre-Training begin your Foundation course (teacher training course) consisting of 60 hours (usually over 12 days) of further exploration and presentation of the material to clients, including verbal cueing and hands-on assisting. This is followed by a year of teaching as an apprentice, during which you will train with a master trainer for another 30 hours to refine and clarify your teaching techniques before attending a final three-day certification course for final certification.

Gyrotonic Ann Arbor & The Movement Center in downtown Ann Arbor offers several Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis educational courses each year, as well as ongoing Gyrokinesis classes for beginners as well as for those pursuing training. There are also opportunities to experience the Gyrotonic Ladder. Certified Pre-Trainer Aimee McDonald-Anderson has taught Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis since 2001 and was in the first STOTT PILATES teacher training course ever offered at Equilibrium, where she taught Pilates for nearly two years. Through Pre-Training courses at Gyrotonic Ann Arbor & The Movement Center you can prepare for Foundation courses offered throughout the country, or for courses with visiting Authorized Master Trainer Juergen Bamberger at Gyrotonic Ann Arbor.
