The best back rehabilitation available……keeping me away from the surgeon.

Former professional hockey player and Connecticut Hockey Hall of Famer who played 13 seasons for the St. Louis, Hartford and Washington NHL teams.

When I first started pilates I was crippled from over use of most joints in my body. Pilates taught me correct posture, how to manage my spine, improving the quality of my life. I feel like I am working without over working. I will always do pilates.

My experience as the Xtend Challenger has been incredible. Not only have all of the teachers and staff at Equilibrium been so supportive of me each time I come to work out, but the results speak for themselves! I feel ready to walk down the aisle with beautiful posture thanks to the strength in both my core and upper body. I am so excited to start my marriage feeling healthy and strong and am grateful to Equilibrium for the wonderful challenge and support. I have truly enjoyed all of the unique classes and wonderful friends I’ve made throughout this process and look forward to continuing to working out at Equilibrium for many years to come.

Hi, thanks for checking in! It’s been such an amazing experience, he is my everything! Every day is a new adventure.

I will say, it was a miracle that I pretty much lost my entire belly after a week of giving birth. I just woke up and it was gone, pretty much the same, if not better, than my pre-pregnancy body. Granted, I did a lot of cardio up until birth and ate super healthy, but Elissha and I worked hard on my obliques and transverse abdominis…and it paid off BIG! Plus, breast feeding forces your abs to pull in and you burn 500 calories a day just from that. I know you have a pregnant client…tell her to keep with it until the end (and don’t lax on your diet!).
It's so beneficial for your health and physical stamina after birth too. Being in shape really helps with feeling "good" when you're sleep deprived and emotional, I couldn't imagine! I think it's almost helped me more with baby than during pregnancy, it definitely carries over in a big way.
Don't forget I jumped with Christine on Thursdays too!

I loved the advanced courses. They were a great way to challenge me as a teacher and add in new exercises for my clients. (Certain ones of course.) I found them so much fun to take.

Wow I can’t believe the 3-month challenge is over. I’m really sad about it. I loved all the classes I’ve taken especially HIIT55 and Total Body Conditioning. I’m a lot stronger. I can actually hold a plank for more than 10 seconds!! I see a lot more muscle tone and my stamina has increased tremendously. Doing the nutritional classes with Sarah has also helped me learn about my body and how my body processes food and what types of foods will give me the best energy. I’m so thankful for Equilibrium Studios for given me this opportunity to jumpstart a healthy way of living and being more active!

After doing Pilates at another studio for 3 years I finally decided I needed a change. That is when I found Equilibrium. I met Marianna last week and Kristen today, what amazing woman to work with, and will be meeting Stephanie when I return from vacation. I wanted to thank your staff for the great first impression. You have a beautiful, clean, relaxed and state of the art studio that I am looking forward to doing what I love in! Thank you!

Dear Equilibrium,
Thank you so much for helping me transform this summer. After returning back from a study abroad program in May I was out of shape. Your studio embraced me with open arms and without judgment. With hard work and dedication I have lost weight and inches. Rain or shine, I looked forward to coming into the studio each day and learning. Committing and following through with attending multiple Xtend Barre classes has really helped me in my transformation. All the staff have gone above and beyond to help me throughout these past few months. I now have a positive outlook on my health and I am excited to see what results are to come as I continue. I will miss you all this fall while I am in New York, but I meet you back at the Barre soon!

College Boot Camp Summer 2013

During my three month XtendChallenge I have been transformed from an occasional exerciser to an enthusiastic one. Required to attend four times a week, I treated it as a job, going to classes as often as I was able, even when I had significant conflicts.

This requirement has converted me and I now look forward to the workouts (definitely a new mindset!) knowing that it brings results. My body is stronger and leaner and I actually look forward to doing planks – crazy, right? And while I still can’t get through the whole chair series or ab workout, I have lost 2 inches off my waist. Gone are the size 18 jeans – my new “good” jeans are a size 14!

Thank you to Nancy and the equilibrium team for selecting me, and to the wonderful teachers who cheerfully encourage me, and all their students, to breathe through it and do that extra repetition.

I am a 37 year old female with congenital scoliosis and misshapen vertebrae in my neck which have contributed greatly to chronic pain and daily migraines for the last 12 years.(My “syndrome” is a Tessiers cleft.)

My Neurologist is the head of the Headache & Neuropathic Pain Clinic at U of M. We have tried more medications than I can count, massage therapy and craniosacral therapy. I do take a cocktail of medication that helps somewhat but I still have daily pain and frequent flair-ups. Three weeks ago I added a Pilates reformer class, at Equilibrium Franklin, to my weekly Pilates mat class. I have never felt so wonderful in my entire life. Not only has my constantly tight muscles relaxed, my neck pain is minimal and my migraines are almost non-existent. I am convinced the twice weekly Pilates is the key to this positive change. I’m curious to see what three times a week Pilates would do.

I love and depend on these classes. I don’t think I have ever felt better or been in better shape in my life as since I have been doing the HIIT 55 and Body Conditioning along with my regular Pilates and other stuff! Not to bore you with the details, but I suffered with terrible back pain and inflammatory problems for years and now I am virtually pain free! I know I owe some of it to losing weight and my vegetarian diet, but most of it is because of Equilibrium! I thank you for that!! You are a great business person; always responsive to trends, surroundings and client’s need. Thanks, Nancy!

I just started back @ Equilibrium Studio after numerous injuries and I am actually using it as part of my physical therapy! The Xtends class is forcing me to use the muscles that were weakened and I and others can already see a major improvement in my strength – not to mention smaller saddle bags and a lifted booty!

Being the xtend challenger at equilibrium has been a great experience, I am so lucky to work with the best instructors and have been feeling great since I started… I am looking good, feeling good and have so much more engery…equilibrium has changed my life in a lot of ways…

I started doing pilates at Equilibrium more than a decade ago; my body was in bad shape after breaking my foot. I felt uneven, unbalanced and out of shape. My physical therapist sent me to Equilibrium. Today, I swim with a masters club, go for long walks and take Xtend and reformer classes at Equilibrium. I have learned how to modify exercises when I am hurting, and I feel safe there. The teachers are all trained, and I feel at home whenever I come to the studio. As a bonus, I felt great the day I turned 50. A year later, I still feel fabulous. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I have found it to be such a welcoming and encouraging environment. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and I had a good start on the weight loss when I started, but the classes I have taken at Equilibrium have given me a new vision of myself, a greater desire to be fit, and a growing confidence.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle has always been a priority in my life- however, balancing that with other goals, especially career-oriented ones, has been a reoccurring issue. So, in accepting the Xtend Challenge, I went in with the intention of not only transforming my body but with transforming my lifestyle as well. I am extremely pleased with the effects on my body- I feel much more lean and toned and have developed a more personal understanding of how I have achieved such things. The focus and dedication it took to push through the Challenge completely transcended to other daily aspects of my life which only reiterates the importance and necessity of taking extra care of myself. With all that said I absolutely could not have done it without the support and encouragement from the amazing instructors and staff at this studio.

To quote the immortal words of Davy Jones and the Monkees, “I’m a believer.” When Nancy Hodari first brought Xtend classes on the scene-the first one in Michigan to have it–she invited me to “take the challenge.” I was a Beverly Hills Club member at the time. So I went to Lululemon at Somerset with a documented, legitimate excuse to buy new Pilates pants. I then bought the Equilibrium signature black gripper socks and I was good to go. I started last summer in the inaugural Xtend classes and never went back to Beverly Hills. Basically, all roads lead to Equilibrium . I’m pretty much a diehard 10:00 a.m. Xtender (Wednesdays and Fridays) and 9:00 a.m. Tuesdays, with the 10:00 a.m. Monday Body Conditioning class with Liz to round out my workout. I like to call it cardio-core. One hour. Badda bing, badda boom. And, besides, Equilibrium is the only place that I can tone and sing freely to Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber without my 10-year-old daughter saying, “Oh Mom, you’re embarrassing me…”

The Xtend Workout Challenge was such an amazing experience….I’m so grateful to Equilibrium & all of the incredible instructors! It was just what I needed to re-focus & jumpstart my weightloss journey. The variety of classes really helped keep me motivated and were so enjoyable. I could see myself getting stronger each week – which just pushed me more. While it was still hard to visually see the challenges at first, they’re definitely there. My jeans fit much better, as do the rest of my clothes. I wasn’t a shorts person before….but…I’ve actually bought some and have been wearing them! I can see definition in my arms, too! And most importantly – A TRIMMER WAISTLINE!! Just in time for summer! 🙂 The Challenge also really motivated me to get back to the healthy eating habits. After busting my butt, there was NO WAY IN HECK I was gonna put garbage into my body. I began to eat more fruits & veggies…why I stopped eating so many to begin w/ is beyond me! I eliminated soda (and I used to drink Diet) from my diet. These healthy habits continue & I’m still very conscientious about what I do & don’t eat. Thank you again, Equilibrium…this was the best 30th birthday gift I could’ve given to myself!

I took part in the wonderful “Matwork Flow with Weights” workshop today. Had to make a quick exit to catch my flight home! Thanks so much! What a beautiful studio – wonderful people and energy there! I will be back.

I miss this studio terribly since there is nothing in my area remotely close to the same level of expertise. Thanks and good luck with your continued success!

Dear Nancy,

I wanted to write you a note to say thank you for the wonderful services that are provided at Equilibrium and to let you know how much I value the great instructors I have worked with.

In July of 2011, I was diagnosed with grade II spondylolisthesis of my 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae. Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which a vertebra in the spine slips out of proper position onto the bone below it, most often due to a fracture in the vertebra. In my case, I had a fracture in my 4th lumbar vertebra causing it to slip forward over my 5th lumbar vertebra. I have no idea what caused this fracture. Commonly they are caused by a congenital weakness in the bone. Nor do I know how long I had this condition prior to being diagnosed. It is not uncommon for this condition to be asymptomatic for a long time before the pressure on the spinal nerves becomes enough that it causes pain. In my case, I went to bed one night feeling fine and woke up the next morning with severe lower back pain and sciatic pain radiating down my left leg. Additionally, by the time I had a MRI and was diagnosed, my condition had already progressed so that I had no disc left between the two bones. Therefore, my vertebrae were bone on bone, adding to the challenge of managing the condition and addressing the pain. To say that this diagnoses negatively impacted my daily activities is an understatement. I have always been very active (running, weight lifting, skiing, golf) person and now I was unable to do many of the activities I enjoyed due to pain. At that time, my son was only 3 years old and I was unable to run after him and play as I much as I was used to because of the pain. My doctor and I opted to treat this condition conservatively which involved a series of steroid injections, daily pain medications and exercise. My goal was to postpone the need for a spinal fusion surgery. Spinal fusion surgery is a big procedure with a very prolonged recovery time typically. I was told to stop doing high level aerobic activity and to strengthen my core. I spent the next few months doing a lot of walking and following a body weight training program at home. While this treatment helped, I had to take pain medications multiple times a day in order to keep the pain levels down.

Fast forward to 2012. My husband and I relocated back to Michigan. I was in a position to work part time from home and decided that I needed to focus on my health, addressing my back condition and the pain I was experiencing. I started coming to Equilibrium in October 2012 and I am very comfortable in saying it has changed my life J I have felt welcomed from the moment I first walked into the studio. I started taking group exercise classes and also taking a private Pilates lesson once a week. Every instructor I worked with was helpful in assisting me in modifying exercises so that I did not cause additional injury to my back. Over my first few months of coming, I started to feel better. I could tell that I was getting stronger and that my flexibility was slowly increasing. Most importantly, I was able to significantly decrease that amount of pain medication I was taking. Prior to starting Pilates, I was taking pain medication multiple times a day. After a few months, I was able to only need pain medication once a day and frequently I was able to not need any pain meds at all. This was just huge for me!

This success continued until early this year. In February, I started to experience a significant increase in lower back pain as well as numbness and tingling down both legs. My MRI showed that my ‘slip’ had progressed and was now causing more pressure on my spinal nerves. Bottom line, I was now heading to surgery. While this was the only option I had left, I was very nervous. While I was waiting for surgery, I let my instructors know what was happening. Again, everyone was great at helping me modify exercises as needed so that I could continue to come to Pilates and participate. Coming to class was a stress relief for me and it helped me address the pain I was having. I also wanted to make sure that I could keep up my strength and flexibility, to the best of my ability, prior to surgery.

I had a L4-L5 spinal fusion surgery on April 24th. I was expecting a prolonged and challenging recovery period as that is what I was told is typical. I am very happy to report that my recovery has been the complete opposite! I immediately started a daily walking program, progressing from 2 miles a day at 4 days post op to 5 miles a day by my 6 week checkup. My doctor was astounded at my progress. He felt that the strength and flexibility I had gained from Pilates was a reason why I was doing so well and he cleared me to start back at Pilates, very slowly increasing my activities over the next several weeks. He said I was doing so well that I did not need physical therapy and that I could use my Pilates classes as PT. On my way home from that doctors appointment, I stopped at Equilibrium and got on the schedule to start with some private Pilates classesJ It has now been 12 weeks since my surgery. I have slowly progressed in my classes and am now almost up to the activity level I was at prior to surgery. Every instructor I have worked with has been great at helping me modify exercises so that I can participate in the activities. While I will always need to modify certain exercises due to my spinal mobility, I am very confident that I will be up to full strength over the next few weeks and I am looking forward to continued improvement over the next several months. My pain is almost totally gone. I still have some stiffness and tenderness right at the surgical site and occasionally, I still get some nerve pain in my left leg. The doctor said this should continue to improve over the next few months as the nerves slowly heal. However, I can now control my pain by taking a Tylenol and many days I need no pain medication at all.

I firmly believe that the strength and flexibility I have gained in Pilates is the main reason why my recovery has been so strong. I am just thrilled with my progress and can’t emphasize enough how much I appreciate the quality of classes and instructors that are provided at Equilibrium. A very special thanks goes to Jen, Amy P., Liz and Kristin. Without those ladies, I don’t think I would have progressed as far as quickly. Thanks so much for all that you offer!
